BiopsyPen is a Project which aims to develop a broadly available, cost effective reliable and compact optical biopsy tool which will radically transform the capability of biophotonic technologies for dermatology and point-of-care diagnosis.

The system will include a pen-like Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) probe and an associate console on which the acquired images will be displayed and analyzed. This is one of the current key societal challenges in the dermatological clinical practice.

  • Optical
    Coherence Tomography

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging modality based on low coherence interferometry which uses infra-red light to create high resolution cross-sectional images of structural features in skin at depths up to 2 mm.

  • Integrated Optics

This is a technology which allows for manufacturing of miniature optical elements and circuits in the micro and nano-meter scales, using fabrication techniques similar to those used in electronic integrated circuits. It enables the development of cost-effective and compact devices with no need for maintenance.
